FITNESS FACT: Adults typically lose 5 pounds of lean muscle weight and gain 15 pounds of fat weight every 10 years. This represents a 20 pound change in body composition. Each pound of lean muscle requires at least 35 calories a day at rest for tissue maintenance, as opposed to about 2 calories a day for each pound of fat. Conclusion: Strength training in addition to many other health benefits, will increase lean muscle tissue and reduce body fat resulting in a better physical appearance. Additional benefits include increased strength, improved cardiovascular endurance, joint flexibility, body composition, resting metabolism, improved bone density, glucose metabolism, gastrointestinal transit, cholesterol levels, resting blood pressure, and reduced arthritic pain. * Source "Building Strength and Stamina by Wayne Westcott, PhD |
